Ugly at Heart

Genesis 6:5-6

5 The LORD saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time. 6 The LORD regretted that he had made human beings on the earth, and his heart was deeply troubled.

I wonder what an ugly heart looks like on the inside. Is it permanently frozen, immobilized in a block of black ice? Is it safe to sleep with ugly hearts running loose all over the streets? Is an ugly heart like a cancer? I mean does ugly sneak up on an unsuspecting juicy red heart and attack it then laugh at it … deflate the joy from it, inhale one healthy beat at a time until all signs of happy dissipate? Where does an ugly heart hide when people with bona fide goodness inside go dancing by? Do ugly hearts wear red paint during the working day? Do you think that an ugly heart wakes up and applies daily, disappointment as its ointment? Is an ugly heart ugly because it has been overexposed to other ugly hearts for far too long? Does an ugly heart even know that it is ugly … Can an ugly heart see itself in the mirror or is it all just a delusion of my overactive imagination? Does an ugly heart wake up in the morning and adorn itself with jewels made of jealousy, wear the latest trend of hatred on its feet, or spew gossip when it speaks?

Does an ugly heart pretend to be a beautiful butterfly just so it can float unsuspectingly by? What makes an ugly heart ugly, is it the refusal to let go of the past? Or does an ugly heart only see sorrow in its tomorrow? Is it possible for an ugly heart to be passed down, you know, snake and curse its way and jiggle through the genetic chain for generations creating ugly at heart little babies?

What does an ugly heart eat for breakfast, lunch and dinner … kindness?  generosity? accountability? forgiveness? perhaps people for dessert even? Can an ugly heart destroy itself at any given time … like will it implode and leak toxic ugly all over the road? One day, will an ugly heart be used as the ultimate weapon of mass destruction, set to detonate and eliminate all of mankind?
